Waco Surf's New Housing Development: The Desperado (2026)

Waco Surf, a haven for surfing enthusiasts, is set to revolutionize the inland surfing experience with its ambitious housing development, The Desperado. This project, nestled on 450 acres adjacent to the existing Waco Surf facility, promises to blend the thrill of artificial waves with the comfort of home. With a focus on family-oriented living, The Desperado aims to create a community where residents can immerse themselves in the surfing lifestyle year-round.

The development will feature three artificial waves, including two surf lagoons and a standing wave, offering a diverse range of surfing experiences. One lagoon and the standing wave are already part of the Waco Surf facility, while a new lagoon is being constructed and scheduled to open in the summer of 2027. Beyond the waves, The Desperado will cater to various interests with amenities such as a golf course, a 25-acre lake for fishing, pickleball courts, a pump track, playgrounds, climbing areas, RV camping, a Nordic spa, clubhouses, restaurants, and work and meeting spaces.

The housing component of The Desperado is equally impressive, with 88 homes, including 44 standalone homes and 44 duplex townhomes. These structures will be 3D printed in concrete by the same company that created House Zero in Austin. Pricing for the homes starts at a staggering $1.6 million, making it an exclusive residential opportunity.

Waco Surf owner and co-president David Taylor envisions The Desperado as a place where families can live the surfing lifestyle, not just visit it. Taylor emphasizes the joy of watching someone ride a wave for the first time, especially a child's expression, as the driving force behind the project. He believes that The Desperado will create a community where residents grow up around the water, the outdoors, and people who share a love for life.

While The Desperado is an exciting development, it is not the first of its kind. Similar housing developments, such as Zion Shores in Utah and Wavegarden's private pools in Brazil, have already proven the concept of residential wave pools. However, The Desperado stands out with its comprehensive amenities and focus on creating a family-oriented community. As the project unfolds, it will be fascinating to see how it is received and whether it sets a new standard for inland surfing destinations.

In my opinion, The Desperado has the potential to become a landmark development, redefining the concept of inland surfing. It combines the thrill of artificial waves with the comfort of home, creating a unique and desirable lifestyle. However, the high price point and exclusivity may raise questions about accessibility and inclusivity. As the project progresses, it will be crucial to consider how it can cater to a diverse range of residents and ensure that the surfing lifestyle is not just a privilege for the few.

One thing that immediately stands out is the innovative use of 3D printing technology in constructing the homes. This not only showcases the potential for sustainable and efficient building practices but also adds a modern twist to the traditional surfing experience. What many people don't realize is that The Desperado is not just about surfing; it's about creating a community that fosters a love for the outdoors, adventure, and family. If you take a step back and think about it, this development could inspire a new wave of inland surfing destinations, encouraging more people to explore the thrill of artificial waves and the comfort of home.
