A Fierce Debate: Honoring Brigitte Bardot's Legacy
The recent passing of iconic French actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has sparked a heated debate among French politicians and the public. Right-wing figure Éric Ciotti has proposed a national tribute to Bardot, a suggestion that has divided opinions across the political spectrum.
Ciotti, a prominent leader of the right-wing UDR party, believes France has a duty to honor Bardot, whom he describes as "a legend of the century" and an embodiment of freedom. He argues that Bardot brought extraordinary international recognition to her country and actively fought for women's liberty and abortion rights.
But here's where it gets controversial: Bardot's complex legacy extends beyond her iconic film career and animal welfare advocacy. Socialist leader Olivier Faure points out that national homages are typically reserved for those who have rendered "exceptional services to the nation." Bardot, he argues, "turned her back on republican values," and her controversial remarks and convictions for inciting racial hatred cannot be ignored.
Bardot's life and career were marked by contradictions. She starred in over 50 films, including the groundbreaking "And God Created Woman" in 1956, which catapulted her to international fame. Yet, she left the world of cinema in 1973 to devote herself to animal welfare, living a reclusive life in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera.
However, Bardot's far-right sympathies often overshadowed her animal activism. Her remarks targeting Muslims and insulting the people of Réunion have left a stain on her legacy. Green MP Sandrine Rousseau questioned on social media, "To be moved by the plight of dolphins and yet be indifferent to the deaths of migrants in the Mediterranean - what degree of cynicism is that?"
The debate over a national tribute for Bardot highlights the differing types of national recognition in France. While some, like Robert Badinter, who abolished the death penalty, and singer Charles Aznavour, were honored with solemn ceremonies, others, like rock star Johnny Hallyday, received public farewells with large crowds lining the streets.
Not everyone on the left opposes the idea of a national homage to Bardot. Socialist MP Philippe Brun argues, "Why not? We've done it for other figures, particularly Johnny Hallyday. If the president decides on it, I don't see why we should oppose it."
But Bardot herself had shunned the limelight for decades. Close friend Wendy Bouchard revealed that Bardot was not interested in medals and ceremonies, preferring a life of simplicity and deprivation. Journalist Steven Bellery, who interviewed Bardot earlier this year, agreed, saying she wanted a simple, intimate funeral.
Bardot's wishes were to be buried at her Riviera home, La Madrague, but the town hall in Saint-Tropez has decided on a private burial in the public cemetery overlooking the Mediterranean and her home. The Brigitte Bardot Foundation, dedicated to animal welfare, has announced that her funeral will take place on January 7th at the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church, with the service broadcast on screens across the town.
