Tasmania Devils Unveil Inaugural Playing Jumper | VFL & VFLW Debut 2024 (2026)

The Tasmania Devils are about to make history, but have they hit the mark with their debut playing kit? The anticipation is building as the Tasmania Devils prepare to roar onto the VFL and VFLW fields for the very first time this year. And what better way to mark such a momentous occasion than by unveiling their inaugural playing jumper! This isn't just any piece of athletic apparel; it's a symbol, a statement, and a nod to the rich tapestry of Tasmanian sporting heritage.

At the heart of the design, you'll find a fierce Devils head, a powerful emblem that perfectly encapsulates the club's spirit and strength. It's a visual representation of the raw energy and determination we can expect from the team. But the symbolism doesn't stop there. Nestled across the chest are two bold horizontal lines. These aren't just decorative; they represent the dual forces driving the club forward – the men's and women's teams – and, importantly, the dedicated members who form the bedrock of their support.

But here's where it gets interesting... While the jumper proudly carries the spirit of Tasmania's AFL past, the actual map of Tasmania, a familiar sight on state jumpers for years, is absent from the exterior. Instead, the poignant phrase “Honouring The Map – Inspiring The Future” is subtly inscribed inside the neckline. This clever placement serves as a constant reminder of the legacy they are building upon, a direct link to the state's AFL history without overtly displaying the iconic geographical outline on the playing strip.

Tasmania Football Club chief executive, Brendon Gale, expressed his excitement, calling the launch a "significant moment". He shared, "We are looking forward to our men and women running out in this new kit that is a great blend of our past and our future." He also highlighted the crucial role of fan input, stating, "We are thankful for the fan feedback in designing the strip." This collaborative approach underscores the club's commitment to its community, ensuring the design resonates deeply with both the athletes and their supporters. "There is a lot of thought in the elements incorporated into the design which we know are meaningful for our athletes and hopefully our fans too," Gale added.

Gale confirmed that this striking new kit will make its debut in the coming weeks as the VFL and VFLW seasons kick off. "Over the course of our journey we will have many guernseys that will take the field," he mused. "Alongside our Foundation Jumper it is great to launch this one today." This suggests that while this is their first official playing strip, it’s just the beginning of a journey filled with diverse and meaningful designs.

And this is the part most people miss... The men's team is set to make their VFL premiership debut on March 21st, hosting Coburg at North Hobart Oval. This match marks a significant return of VFL football to Tasmania, a spectacle that hasn't graced the state since 2008. For the women's team, their inaugural VFLW season opener is scheduled for May 16th, also at North Hobart Oval, where they will face the Casey Demons.

It's important to note that this particular jumper is distinct from the AFL and AFLW guernseys, which are slated for unveiling closer to 2028, when the Devils are expected to enter those elite competitions. This phased approach allows for separate, tailored identities for each level of competition.

So, what do you think of the Tasmania Devils' new playing jumper? Does the 'Honouring The Map' inscription capture the essence of Tasmanian football history effectively, even without the map itself? Or do you feel the iconic map should have been a more prominent feature? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below – we'd love to hear if you agree or disagree!
