A Controversial Twist: The Palace's Response to Suntay's Comments
In a recent development, the Palace has spoken out against Quezon City Representative Bong Suntay's interpretation of Vice President Sara Duterte's remarks. The Vice President's comments, which suggested hiring a hitman to target President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and others, have sparked a heated debate.
Palace press officer Claire Castro emphasized the seriousness of any threats made against the President's life, regardless of the context. She highlighted how such threats create fear and anxiety, constituting intimidation.
"It's easy for Suntay to downplay these remarks because it's not his family being threatened," Castro pointed out. "Imagine if someone called and said they were imagining killing you. Wouldn't you feel threatened?"
Here's where it gets interesting: Castro, a fellow lawyer, clarified the legal distinction between grave threats and homicide/murder. She explained that grave threats involve the infliction of a crime upon the person, honor, or property of the threatened individual.
During a House of Representatives' justice committee hearing on the impeachment complaints against Duterte, Suntay argued that her words were conditional and not actual threats. However, Castro disagreed, stating that the President expects due process and accountability.
"The President wants the Constitution upheld and for evidence to be examined. If anyone is found accountable, they should face the consequences," she added.
And this is the part most people miss: the third impeachment complaint against Duterte cites her death threats in a November 2024 video.
