Labubu Toy Manufacturer Exploited Workers, Labour Group Claims
A labour rights organisation has uncovered evidence of worker exploitation in a Chinese factory producing the popular Labubu dolls. China Labor Watch (CLW), a US-based non-profit, alleges that its investigation found one of Pop Mart's suppliers making employees work excessive overtime, signing blank or incomplete contracts, and not providing paid leave.
The Labubu dolls, known for their furry designs and blind box sales, have gained worldwide popularity. Pop Mart, the Beijing-based toy retailer, is now facing scrutiny over its supply chain.
Pop Mart has responded to the claims, stating they are investigating and will take firm action if the allegations are true. They conduct regular audits, including yearly independent reviews by international inspectors.
CLW's report details an in-depth probe into Shunjia Toys Co Ltd, a Labubu manufacturer in Guangdong, China. Researchers conducted 51 interviews with employees, revealing labour issues such as illegal overtime, unclear contract practices, and a lack of safety training.
Despite no child labour being identified, 16-year-olds were subjected to adult working conditions without special care, as required by Chinese law. CLW urges Pop Mart to address these issues, compensate affected workers, and ensure compliance with Chinese labour laws and international standards.
This controversy highlights the impact of brand sourcing practices on labour conditions in OEM facilities, where clients set pricing and production schedules.
