A remarkable journey of resilience and leadership: Abi Burton, the trailblazing back row for England and Trailfinders Women, has taken on an inspiring role as the chair of the groundbreaking Women's Rugby Board. This board, a first of its kind, is a powerful platform for female rugby players to have their voices heard and their unique challenges addressed.
But here's where it gets controversial... Burton's appointment comes with a powerful backstory. Just three years ago, she had to battle a life-threatening immune disease that attacked her brain, requiring her to be placed in a coma. Despite this, she emerged stronger and led England to victory in the Women's Rugby World Cup in September.
"I'm incredibly honored to be elected as the chair of this historic board," Burton said. "It's a chance to ensure that the incredible talent and passion of women's rugby players are recognized and represented. I'm excited to collaborate with the board and the RPA to advocate for the entire women's game."
The Rugby Players Association (RPA) established this separate women's board to ensure better representation for female players and to address the specific challenges they encounter.
And this is the part most people miss... The board's composition is a diverse mix of talent and experience. Joining Burton are:
- Jenny Hesketh, full-back for Bristol Bears and Wales, who has been elected as vice-chair.
- Emily Tuttosi, who started for Canada against England in the 2022 World Cup final, representing Exeter Chiefs.
- Sam Monaghan, representing Gloucester Hartpury.
- Lagi Tuima, from Harlequins.
- Grace Deane, of Leicester Tigers.
- Elis Martin, from Loughborough Lightning.
- Tysh Harper, representing Sale Sharks.
- Ella Wyrwas, from Saracens.
For the 2025-26 season, these women will be the voices and leaders of the Women's Rugby Board.
